Here are 5 world-famous events that all hardcore gamers and gaming fans simply must attend, at least at one point in their lifetime.

1. Comic Con

One of the most well known and highly trafficked video game conventions, would have to be the yearly celebrated Comic Con. Although, hosting a convention each and every year isn’t seen as anything out of the ordinary, this convention is the exception. Hosting more sub-genres of fan related materials than could ever be accurately accounted for, video games are one of the most celebrated events at the convention.

Even though Comic Con hosts itself to more than just video games, namely things such as anime, comic books, movies, television, science fiction, and other fantasy followings – it’s still one of the most epic places that any hardcore video game fan should visit. Since the convention has a little bit of everything, no matter what type of video game your’e drawn to most, everyone will be able to find at least something that they like there. Although, Comic Con is found in numerous locations, the world’s largest is held in  San Diego (California, United States), which is where all gamers should undoubtedly go.

2. BlizzCon

It’s easy to guess what games this convention revolves around. Blizzard just so happens to be one of the best known names in the video game universe, as well as being one of the highest rated – at least as far as quality goes. Since Blizzard is so well known, chances are that if you’re a video gamer with a large library of games to speak of, you’re probably the owner of at least one or two games that were either a product of Blizzard or affiliated with the company. Whether you know it or not, is the question.

The convention, much like any other convention, is ever changing. That being said, much of its content changes from year to year. But there will always be certain events that will stay the same. BlizzCon usually has the newest announcements available for the Blizzard franchise, playable demos of games that exist or that haven’t hit store shelves yet, guest speaking panels, the ability to ask Blizzard developers related questions, costume contests, and even (if the demos weren’t enough) previews of upcoming video games. It’s held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

3. Tokyo Game Show (or TGS)

For those of us game players who either reside in Japan, or plan on visiting there anytime soon, there exists the Tokyo Game Show. One of the largest video game conventions in the world, it attracts more than 200,000 visitors per year. Almost every publisher of video games (with the exception of Nintendo) can be expected to make their presence known here. All of the latest games are revealed and demos galore! This is the mecca of new Japanese RPG games, so if you’re hoping to be one of the first people to experience the game play of an up and coming title in that genre, then look no further. It’s always open to the public too, and at a low price for admission at the gate (approximately $10). Tokyo Game Show is held in Tokyo, Japan – which is most certainly a place where all gamers must go.

4. Gamescom

The largest video game convention in Europe and the second largest in the world, Gamescom drew in 340,000 visitors in 2013, that’s not including more than the 6,000 journalists and 458 exhibitors who are there for your entertainment.

Besides the video game theme that’s obviously present here, Gamescom is host to musical entertainment, carnival rides, sports arenas, and many more. It’s truly a place of entertainment and shouldn’t be docked off the list of places to see anytime soon. Gamescom is held annually at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This event is highly suggested for gamers in Europe (or anyone who plans on visiting there) to go.

5. The Game Developers Conference (or GDC)

This place isn’t quite considered your typical video game “convention”. This is the gathering place of many of the world’s game developers, which allows for an exclusive inside look to the inner-workings of some of the most innovative games to ever be made. It’s comprised of an awards shows, an expo, tutorials, lectures, networking and more. It’s truly a world of knowledge, for any and all video game fans who are interested to know how video games work. The GDC main event is held at Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA.
